story

Reverse:1999 takes place in a world with magic called arcanum. Strangely, on the last day of the year 1999, "the storm" caused eras in time to reverse and lead to affected objects and people disappearing. The storm reverses all humans, but arcanists (those who can use arcanum) can survive if they reach shelter. One such place is the St Pavlov Foundation, where the Timekeeper works. The Timekeeper is the only person immune to the storm, and her team work to prevent the storm from occuring.

gameplay

Reverse:1999 is a strategy RPG with turn based battles based around "cards". Every character has 2 cards and one ultimate they can use. The objective of the round is usually to defeat a specific or all enemies.

The number of cards the player can use in each round is determined by the number of ally characters on the field. Generally, this is 3 (with one backup in a suitcase, who comes out if an ally dies.)

The cards the player recieves in each round is determined randomly, except for the ultimate. Ultimates are given when a characters "moxie" reaches the required number; moxie can be gained by moving, merging or using a card of that character. Moving two of the same card allows them to combine and level up one star.

Many rounds have certain terms that can affect the player, enemy, or all characters. for example, ally characters may lose 10% of their HP every round. Enemy abilities and status effects can be checked by pressing Battle Intel before the battle, or double clicking an enemy. Here, the player can also view any [status] effects and their details.

Every character has an afflatus. There are two kinds: natural and primal. The natural afflatus are Beast, Plant, Star, and Mineral; the primal afflatus are Intelligence and Spirit. Each afflatus has an advantage (+30% DMG) over another, as shown below. In game, when an enemy is selected, cards with a stronger afflatus have a tag saying 'Stronger'. Damage is also categorised into mental & reality damage (in addition to genesis damage i.e. true damage that ignores DEF and DMG reduction). Enemies have different susceptibilities to each.

Beast is stronger than plant. Plant is stronger than star. Star is stronger than mineral. Mineral is stronger than beast. Spirit and intelligence are stronger than each other.

characters

In Reverse:1999 any character is viable to fit in a team (even if it means having to create a niche "cheese" one.) Teams usually have a damage dealer (DPS), healer and . The characters the player uses should be chosen based on match conditions and afflatus advantages. Teams can also be centered around afflatus, reality/mental damage or damage type (e.g. poison, crit).

roles explanation
DPS deals damage
sustain heals or shields
utility buffs, debuffs or controls
sub-DPS provides some utility but can also deal damage

DPS

Which of these DPS' is the most meta?

While she is very strong, a more recent release has outshined her.

Correct, her damage output is unmatched (partly due to the fact that she is one of the few Limited characters).

While he is a 6 star, he cannot match the damage of other DPS'.

Characters are also categorised based on their arcanist blood. These categories are:

  • Arcanist : people with the ability to use arcanum
  • Human: people without the ability to use arcanum
  • The Mixed : mixed arcanist and human blood
  • The Infected: the surviving victims of the Beyond Disease
  • The Awakened: started off as simple, inanimate objects but gained sentience
  • The Beyond: arcanists that have origins beyond the natural world, instead of arcanum
  • gacha

Reverse:1999 is a gacha game - a game where you use currency and get something random. In Reverse:1999, you gacha for characters. There is a standard, event, and limited banner.

There are 5 rarities of characters - 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 stars. 6 stars are the strongest and rarest. 6 stars are the only rarity that have 50/50s and pity. Generally, it is recommended to not pull on standard banners. The reason for this is that it is possible to recieve standard banner characters from the other two, when you lose a 50/50 (when drawing a 6 star, it has a 50% chance of being the character on the banner and a 50% chance of being a standard character).

Pity is when you have a higher or guaranteed chance of drawing a 6 star. In R:1999, guarantee is when you have done 70 pulls (on event banner this can be cumulative across banners, while for limited banners they must all be on that banner). Additionally, when you hit 60 pulls, your chance of getting a 6 star increases by 4% for each pull between 60 and 70 pulls (the beginning chance is 1.5%). Pity resets when you pull the banner character. 50/50 and pity carries to later banners, except for limited banners.
